For many of our treasured writers, things do not get easier as they grow older. Since its inception over thirty years ago the Writers Benevolent Fund has helped writers in trouble—assisting with pressing debts, illness expenses, back rents, supplements to pensions, nursing home expenses, wheelchair costs, and funeral expenses. Often we are not able to do enough, but the amount that we are able to do is always deeply appreciated. We would like to do more. Our capital base is small and grants are paid from interest earned. We aim to ensure that all applications for assistance can be met.
All our funds come from public donations. Writers themselves give generously each year, but wider support is needed if the Writers Benevolent Fund is to grow in step with needs of ill or ageing writers. In 2015, for the first time, we are making an appeal to book club members throughout Australia in the belief that no connection is closer, or more heartfelt, than that between book club members and their beloved Australian authors.
Whether large or small, your donation can make a difference.
